Attic ladder installation

Getting the most out of your roof space as far as storage goes really makes sense but without easy access it can be more problematic than beneficial.

Installing a set of attic stairs is a great way to improve access to the space in your ceiling.

The opening is cut out with a plasterboard saw and extra bracing can be added up in the roof if needed, just remember to double check for any electrical cables or water pipes before starting to cut.

And as always... measure twice, cut once!

Installation can be tricky and there are different ways to do the job in different situations.

Using a rope, a couple of ratchet straps and a pulley makes the job easier but it is a two person job even with the right gear.

I am using bugle head screws to fix the frame of this attic ladder to the rafters and because there is a 20mm gap I have used an off cut of tasmanian oak as a packer.

After fixing the frame of the attic ladder to the rafters with at least 4 heavy gauge screws it's time to unfold the ladder and see how much needs to come off the bottom.

Using my trusty grinder, I proceed to shorten the last section of the aluminium ladder to just the right length.

Presto, the attic ladder is ready for use!

going up in the world!
